What You Need
You need capital, advise, support and a politically and financially powerful network. You have the business, the vision, the energy, the ambition you just need the fuel. You are faced with existential threats on a daily basis. Threats of not having enough capital to get a business to profitability. Threats from competitors. Threats from internal employees who might abscond with some intellectual property and give it to a rival. You need to fight off these threats, execute your plan, scale your company and get rich doing so.
Other Investors Are Sheep
The problem is that most investors, even so called angels or VCs, are risk averse and exhibit herd like behaviour.
Sheep behaviour.
Let us tell you something, following the trend, investing in trendy early stage to medium stage companies, and having the trend work out, won’t make an investor rich.
No way
Why? The investor overpaid for the investment. When something is obvious, the market tends to price that investment efficiently. You pay up and there’s no more upside.
What will make a venture capital investor rich is being contrarian and being right. You invest when others won’t and you call it right. This generates exceptional profits.
Why? You bought the investment at a good price and then the investment was revalued much, much higher.
How does the above impact you? It impacts you by having the majority of private equity managers and venture capitalists overlook your business. If your idea or operating business is slightly unorthodox…you WON’T GET FUNDED. If your business is not already generating tens of millions in revenue…you WON’T GET FUNDED. If your app doesn’t already have a couple million users…you WON’T GET FUNDED.
Even though many investors talk about how they love innovative companies, etc…at the end of the day…when it’s time to invest…they go with an investment that has the appearance of safety. They go with a company that already has the backing of other investment firms. They go with an entrepreneur that already has started and profitably sold two or even three companies.
Of course these conservative investors end up buying in at super high valuations and don’t make much money, but it was an emotionally easy decision.
Where does this leave you? UNFUNDED.
